Adapted from a novel by 19th-century Portuguese author Camilo Castelo Branco, the film begins with its central character, a 14-year-old orphan. After a fight he is put in the school’s sickbay and tended by nuns. He is visited by an aristocratic woman who gives him a toy theatre. Gradually he learns he is the illegitimate son of this tormented aristocratic woman. The film shifts back and forth in time and is narrated by a succession of unreliable narrators. Our lives, the film implies, are tales interwoven with the autobiographical narratives of others, many of them strangers to us.
