It is midwinter, a mysterious man arrives weeping at the edge of remote town plagued by an endless war. The man is distracted from his distress by the screams of a drowning boy coming from a nearby river. He jumps into the freezing water and saves the child. The people of the town initially welcome the man but their mistrust of strangers is never far away, particularly as this one not only seems to have healing powers and is fond of reciting philosophical and biblical fragments, but also attracts the attentions of two of the towns women.
