Great Freedom

In post-war Germany, liberation by the Allies doesn’t mean freedom for everyone. Over the course of decades, Hans is spied on and repeatedly jailed under Paragraph 175, a law criminalising homosexuality. As Hans returns to prison again and again, he develops an unlikely bond with his cellmate Viktor, a convicted murderer. What begins as revulsion blossoms into something far more tender in Sebastian Meise’s searing depiction of love in the face of injustice that was named winner of the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at Cannes.
