WUTHERING HEIGHTS

Obsessed with the dirty truth, writer and director Andrea Arnold (Bafta winners Fishtank and Red Road, an Oscar for Wasp) has taken on Wuthering Heights. Fascinated by how life shapes people she strips this raw story bare, using few words and plenty of bleak countryside. In Emily Brontë’s story Heathcliff, a vengeful adult, is referred to as different and dark and treated with such violence and prejudice as a child that Arnold cast him, against convention but not logic, as black. Her usual mix of non-actors and no compromise makes this a compelling take on an amazing story.
