A lyrical and warm portrait of an Italian family eking out a meagre existence as beekeepers in the Tuscan wilds, ruled by the irascible head of the family, Wolfgang, who has constructed a peculiar set of rules to protect his family from “the end of the world”. Into this non-idyll comes a television crew filming a surreally tacky competition called “Countryside Wonders”, which offers big prizes. 12-year-old Gelsomina resolves to get her family onto the show to rescue it from penury. Filmed in grainy 16mm, in natural light, and displaying a relaxed intimacy among a cast that gives apparently effortless performances. Won the Jury Grand Prix, Cannes 2014.
