WALKABOUT

On the surface Roeg's second film is a simple tale of a young brother and sister's abandonment in the unforgiving Australian outback and their subsequent search for a route back to 'civilisation.' However, in the hands of such a cinematic director so adept at utilising discontinuous editing techniques, stark visual juxtaposition and impressionistic sound design this is an unsettling meditation on culture clash and sexual awakening. Played out in the shimmering light of the desert Walkabout charts a loss of innocence; not only for the young siblings at the centre of the story but for the young nation they traipse through.
