THELMA

Thelma (Harboe) is a lonely young woman from a religious family who has led a sheltered life. At Oslo University she falls in love with Anja (Wilkins), and starts having seizures and exhibiting telekinetic powers. Her feelings become increasingly intense and her powers more and more extreme, and she struggles to reconcile repressed lesbianism and Christianity, but what is the real explanation for her fits and peculiar animal magnetism? The script by Trier and Eskil Vogt involves initially puzzling flashbacks to Thelma’s childhood, and director of photography Jakob Ihre creates fascinating tableaux from overhead shots, remote landscapes and strange compositions.
