Set against the backdrop of the music scene in Austin, Texas and involving struggling songwriters Faye (Mara) and BV (Gosling), music mogul Cook (Fassbender) and a waitress he ensnares (Portman). Novice musician Faye becomes involved with both BV, a musician on the verge of success, and Cook, a string-pulling producer. A love triangle starts up, as they seek success in a rock’n’roll landscape of betrayal and seduction. Replete with fisheye shots in gorgeous modern apartments (Faye works as an estate agent), and with a score ranging from Big Freedia to Arvo Pärt, creating a swirling, disorientating feeling.
