SON OF SAUL

Winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Son of Saul is the debut feature from Hungarian director László Nemes, following a day-and-a-half in the life of war prisoner Saul Ausländer. Set during late WW2, in the Auschwitz concentration camp, the narrative is centred around the protagonist of Saul, a Hungarian-Jewish member of the Sonderkommando. Through an intense yet constrained focus, the horrors of Saul’s labour are transitioned in and out of the frame’s periphery: exposing, blurring and meditating on the nature of war and humanity.
