In this film based on Stanisław Lem’s eponymous novel, psychologist Dr Kris Kelvin is sent to a space station that is orbiting the water-based planet Solaris and in which death, dreams and the past occupy its crew and half-abandoned corridors. Tarkovsky’s Solaris is an intellectual and emotional dialogue with Kubrick’s 2001. It visualises the human condition in a way cinema had never seen before, with love, the noise of consciousness and ghosts of forgotten lives creating layer upon layer within its narrative poetic format. To quote Lem: ‘We have no need for other worlds. We need mirrors. We don’t know what to do with other worlds.’
