Lyn (Scanlan) and daughter Iona (Newmark) – ‘Dafty One’ and ‘Dafty Two’ – are misfits who find life immensely difficult and attract derision and bullying. Iona becomes a ‘best friend’ of three school bullies, whereupon hunchbacked Lyn feels left out and pretends to befriend a neighbour. Lyn seeks comfort in her budgerigar and by filling the house with chintz and kitsch. Humour is blended with heartfelt emotion and aching sadness. Lyn and Iona are utterly convincing, and the dénouement of Haywood’s heartbreaking semi-autobiographical début is part tragedy, part happy ending.
