His classic was lost on contemporary audiences but is now seen as the masterpiece that it is with Mitchum’s career topping preacher/psychopath, with the later much copied love and hate knuckle tattoos, dominating a powerful and dark story also blessed with Lillian Gish in gun-toting spinster role.
