NATIONAL GALLERY

  • 12

This epic by the 84-year-old doyen of the documentary, shot in 2012, has no narrative, voiceover, score or added effects, and is apparently without structure or comment. It goes behind the scenes, adopting a fly-on-the-wall strategy, and focuses on the minutiae of life at the institution, examining the meticulous work of frame-makers, cleaners, varnishers, restorers and carpenters. The film looks at everything with equal interest, peering, gazing, homing in and moving on like the visitors circulating slowly among the paintings.
