Back in autobiographical territory, Nanni Moretti’s new film is about the business of making a film, and realising that – however chaotically real and pressing this may be as a job – movie-making is an evasion of outer reality, which here is closing in on all sides. The film director juggles her teenage daughter, a dying mother and a needy and pompous Hollywood star, played with comic charm and enthusiasm by John Turturro. An intriguing soundtrack features Nino Rota, Arvo Pärt, Leonard Cohen and Philip Glass.
