THE LOOK OF SILENCE

‘The Look of Silence’ is Oppenheimer’s powerful companion to his Oscar-nominated 2012 documentary ‘The Act of Killing’. Through Oppenheimer’s footage of perpetrators of the 1965 Indonesian genocide, the film follows the youngest son of a family of survivors, who intends to confront the identified killers and ask them to accept responsibility. It is both a film of tragic realism and political provocation: perhaps more honest and bold than its predecessor. Painful and profound, this compelling documentary is one of the year’s best.
