LEVIATHAN

Leviathan, a Russian tragic drama from acclaimed director Andrey Zvyagintstev (The Return, 2003), is a modern re-telling of the biblical trials of Job. Set on the peninsula by the Barents Sea, auto-repair shop owner Nikolai is forced to recruit an old army companion when corrupt mayor, Dmitriy, demands his land and threatens the demolishment of his home. Unknowingly, the man’s arrival will stem more misfortune and tribulations. This stunning, grave and intimate drama, winner of the Best Screenplay at Cannes, 2014, is not only a social commentary on contemporary Russia but a story of powerful emotion.
