LE CHARME DISCRET DE LA BOURGEOISIE

Buñuel’s surrealist masterpiece. The action revolves around a group of well-to-do metropolitan sophisticates who spend their time trying to meet up for dinner parties only to be thwarted by some bizarre turn of events. The surrealist and anthropologist in Buñuel was fascinated by the ritual of the dinner party: without a host, this social event resembles humanity frantically inventing intricate rules for itself in the absence of God. The protagonists are seen repeatedly, dressed for dinner, making their way down an empty country road. We don’t know where they’ve come from or where they are going. A subtle, understated and subversive film.
