Set before, during and after the First World War and in France, Germany and Austria, the film depicts the relationship between an Austrian and a Frenchman and a free-spirited woman, Catherine (Jeanne Moreau). In a lyrical and nostalgic depiction of the period, the young friends soon find themselves on opposite sides in the war and subsequently their friendship is challenged by the shifts within their relationship with Catherine.
Jules et Jim won the 1962 Grand Prix of French film prizes, the Étoile de Cristal, with Jeanne Moreau winning best actress the same year.
“What is so astonishing about it is not just its freshness and vitality - the feeling that life is always exciting if sometimes dangerous - but the way the young director managed to mould his characters so accurately to the events of their time.” Derek Malcolm, The Guardian.
