Unsentimental debut feature from Lee, filmed in Yorkshire and showing the countryside not as somewhere picturesque but as a strange, fierce place. All the school friends of young farmer Johnny (O’Connor) have gone to university, but he stays at the farm after his father (Hart) has a stroke. He indulges in drinking and casual sex until the arrival for lambing of Romanian migrant Gheorghe (Secareanu), who calmly submits to the squalor of life in a farmyard caravan. Gheorghe and Johnny have to spend nights working up in the hills, where an intense relationship starts.
