CUTIE AND THE BOXER

Positioned as a silent member of the Shinohara family, in this documentary the camera follows the relationship between the Japanese Neo-Dadaist, Ushio Shinohara, and his wife/assistant, Noriko. As one of Japan and New York’s most unappreciated artists, Ushio’s own struggle for commercial success parallel his wife’s personal ambitions to pursue her own artistic vision with a collection of semi-autobiographical drawings that depict their chaotic 40 year marriage. The film encapsulates how this dedication to both each other and their art illustrates the richness and challenges of their unique companionship.
